For years, one question stopped thousands of Bangladeshi women from planning their Umrah: “Can I go without a mahram?” The rules have changed, the practicalities have changed, and much of the advice circulating in Bangladesh is out of date. This guide covers what women travelling from Dhaka, Chittagong, or Sylhet actually need to know — from Saudi regulations to what to wear during tawaf.
Can Women Perform Umrah Without a Mahram?
Under current Saudi regulations, Yes. Saudi Arabia lifted the mahram requirement for women performing Umrah, and women of any age can now obtain an Umrah visa without a male guardian accompanying them. Bangladeshi women travel every month in organised groups without a mahram. Two important notes:
- The religious question is separate from the legal one. Some scholars maintain that a woman should travel with a mahram; others permit travel in a safe, organised group of women. This is a matter to settle with your own religious guidance. What has changed is that Saudi law no longer blocks the trip.
- Practically, group travel is the answer. Most Bangladeshi women who travel without a mahram join a group package where the agency provides guides, transport, and hotel arrangements from airport to airport. Read about How Group Umrah compares to travelling solo for women travelling without family, the group option removes almost every practical worry.
What Do Women Wear for Umrah? (The Ihram Question)
Unlike men, women have no special ihram garment. A woman’s ihram is her intention plus ordinary modest clothing. The rules while in the state of ihram:
- Any loose, plain, full-covering clothing is acceptable abaya, salwar kameez with a long orna, or a prayer gown all work
- The face and hands remain uncovered during ihram; the niqab and gloves are specifically not worn in this state (a veil may be draped loosely if desired)
- No perfume or scented products from the moment of ihram
- Dark or neutral colours are practical in the crowds, but there is no required colour
Pack 4–5 sets of comfortable cotton clothing, good walking sandals, and a small prayer gown. Our full Umrah packing checklist for Bangladeshi pilgrims includes a women’s section covering everything from unscented toiletries to what to carry inside the Haram.
Rules Specific to Women During the Rituals
- Tawaf and sa’i are identical to men’s, with one exception: women do not perform ramal (the brisk walk in the first three rounds of tawaf) or uncover the right shoulder — those are men’s practices.
- Hair cutting: After completing sa’i, women trim a fingertip’s length from the end of their hair. Shaving is only for men.
- Menstruation: A woman in her period may do everything except tawaf (and the prayer). She enters ihram normally, waits until she is pure, then performs tawaf and sa’i. If your dates are uncertain, tell your group leader early — itineraries can flex, and this is a routine situation guides handle all the time. Some women consult their doctor about delaying their cycle for the trip; both approaches are common.
- Prayer areas: The Haram in Makkah and Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah have dedicated women’s sections. During crowded times, praying inside the hotel and joining the congregation via the courtyard is normal.
Booking the Rawdah in Madinah
For many women, praying in the Rawdah — the garden of Paradise inside Masjid an-Nabawi — is the emotional peak of the whole journey. Women’s access runs through dedicated appointment slots booked on the Nusuk app, and the women’s slots are often more generous than men’s. Book as early as possible; your agency should handle this the moment your dates are fixed.
Safety and Comfort: What Women Travellers Report
Makkah and Madinah are among the safest cities a woman can visit — millions of women travel there yearly, and the entire infrastructure is built around pilgrims. Still, a few habits make the trip smoother:
- Keep your hotel card in your bag; the area around the Haram is a maze of identical-looking streets after Isha
- Agree on a fixed meeting point with your group before entering the mosque — phone networks jam near the Haram at prayer times
- Use the women’s security lanes at mosque entrances; bags are checked
- Choose a hotel close to the Haram. A 300-metre walk versus a 1.5-kilometre walk matters enormously when you are making five prayers a day. This is exactly where cheap packages cut corners — see the hidden costs to watch for in cheap Umrah packages
- If you are pregnant or travelling with a baby, tell the agency at booking time so hotel floors and transport are arranged accordingly
Travelling as a Couple, a Family, or a Women’s Group
- With your husband: Newly married couples increasingly combine the spiritual journey with their first trip together Our Honeymoon Umrah package is built around exactly this.
- With parents: Daughters often accompany elderly mothers. Wheelchair support at the Haram, ground-floor rooms, and shorter walking routes can all be arranged See Our guide to Umrah with elderly parents.
- With a women’s group: Agencies now run women-only groups with female group coordination. Ask about upcoming departures when you enquire about a Group Umrah package.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an age restriction for women performing Umrah without a mahram?
Under current Saudi rules, no the previous requirement (which once applied to women under 45) has been lifted. Women of any age can obtain an Umrah visa without a mahram.
Can a woman perform Umrah while pregnant?
Yes, with her doctor’s clearance. Airlines have their own rules for later stages of pregnancy — most restrict flying after 28–32 weeks — so check both your airline and your travel insurance before booking.
What documents do women need for the Umrah visa?
The same documents as men: valid passport, photographs, and vaccination certificates. See the full list in our guide to the Umrah visa from Bangladesh.
What happens if my period starts after I have entered ihram?
Nothing is invalidated. Remain in ihram, delay tawaf until you are pure, and complete sa’i afterwards. Group itineraries accommodate this routinely — inform your group leader and do not feel embarrassed; it is one of the most common situations on any group trip.
Are Hotel rooms shared in group packages?
Standard group packages room women with other women (usually 3–4 per room). Couples and families get private rooms. Ask about room configuration when comparing package prices.
