Umrah Packing Checklist for Bangladeshi Pilgrims

Umrah Packing Checklist for Bangladeshi Pilgrims: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Packing for Umrah is not like packing for a regular holiday. You are travelling to two of the busiest cities on earth, walking several kilometres a day, and following a dress code that most Bangladeshi travellers have never worn before. Pack too little and you will waste money buying overpriced essentials near the Haram. Pack too much and you will drag heavy luggage through crowded hotel lobbies and airport queues. This checklist is written specifically for pilgrims flying from Dhaka, Chittagong, or Sylhet. It covers everything you need for a 7 to 14 day journey, organised so you can tick items off as you pack.

Documents: The Items You Cannot Replace in Saudi Arabia

Everything else on this list can be bought in Makkah if you forget it. Your documents cannot. Keep these in a slim pouch that stays with you at all times, never in checked luggage:

  • Passport with at least 6 months validity
  • Printed Umrah visa copy (even though the visa is electronic, hotels and checkpoints sometimes ask for paper)
  • Return flight tickets (printed and saved on your phone)
  • Hotel booking confirmations for Makkah and Madinah
  • Vaccination certificates, including meningitis (ACWY) which Saudi Arabia requires
  • 4–6 passport-size photographs
  • Photocopies of your passport and national ID kept separately from the originals
  • Your agency’s Saudi contact numbers written on paper, in case your phone dies

If you have not yet arranged your visa, read our guide on the documents you need for an Umrah visa from Bangladesh before you book anything else.

Ihram and Clothing

For men: Pack two sets of ihram (two unstitched white sheets each). One set gets dirty or wet quickly, and having a spare means you are never stuck. Add an ihram belt with a zip pocket — it holds your money and phone while you are in the state of ihram, when normal trousers are not allowed. You will wear ihram from the miqat, so many Bangladeshi pilgrims change at Dhaka airport or on the plane before crossing the miqat boundary.

For women: There is no special ihram garment for women. Loose, plain abayas or salwar kameez in breathable cotton work well. Pack at least 4–5 sets because laundry is expensive near the Haram. A supply of hijabs and one or two prayer gowns complete the set.

For everyone:

  • Comfortable sandals or slippers that slip on and off easily (you will remove them dozens of times a day at the mosque)
  • A cloth or drawstring bag to carry your sandals inside the Haram — shoe racks fill up and shoes get lost
  • One warm layer: Madinah gets surprisingly cold at night between November and February
  • Regular clothes for travel days and for Madinah, where ihram is not required
  • Underwear and socks for every day of the trip; laundry services eat into your budget

Health and Medicine Kit

Pharmacies in Makkah are well stocked but expensive, and explaining your prescription in Arabic or English at midnight is stressful. Bring from Bangladesh:

  • All prescription medicines in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription
  • Paracetamol, oral saline (dehydration is the most common problem pilgrims face), and antacids
  • Vaseline or anti-chafing cream — essential for men in ihram, as the fabric rubs against skin during long walks
  • Unscented soap and unscented moisturiser (scented products are not allowed in the state of ihram)
  • Band-aids and blister plasters for your feet
  • A small bottle of hand sanitiser
  • Face masks — the crowds during tawaf are dense, and many pilgrims return home with the famous “Haram cough”

If you are travelling with parents or older relatives, their medicine kit needs extra planning. Our guide to performing Umrah with elderly parents covers this in detail.

Money and Electronics

  • Carry US dollars or Saudi riyals in cash; exchange a portion in Dhaka before you fly, because airport rates in Jeddah are poor
  • A dual-currency card (many Bangladeshi banks now offer them) as backup
  • Universal travel adapter — Saudi Arabia uses Type G sockets, the British three-pin style
  • Power bank (keep it in hand luggage; airlines do not allow power banks in checked bags)
  • A local SIM or eSIM plan; STC and Mobily booths are available at Jeddah airport

Budget note: pilgrims who plan their spending in advance almost always spend less. Our breakdown of hidden costs to watch for when booking cheap Umrah packages will help you estimate how much cash to carry.

Items Most First-Timers Forget

  • A small umbrella for shade — the midday sun in Makkah is intense even in winter
  • Zip-lock bags for wet clothes and for carrying Zamzam-soaked items home
  • A pocket-size dua book or the duas saved offline on your phone
  • Tasbih counter ring for tawaf rounds
  • Nail clipper and scissors — packed in checked luggage only, never in hand luggage
  • An empty foldable bag inside your suitcase for gifts, dates, and Zamzam containers on the return trip

What to Leave Behind

  • Perfumed products of any kind if you will enter ihram soon after landing
  • Expensive jewellery — it attracts attention in crowds and adds worry
  • Heavy books; download PDFs instead
  • More than two pairs of shoes
  • Anything you would be devastated to lose

Pack According to Your Package Length

A 7-day trip and a 14-day trip need different amounts of clothing but the same documents and medicines. If you have not finalised your travel dates yet, compare the 7-day, 10-day, and 14-day Umrah packages to see which suits your leave schedule and budget, or read our guide on how many days you really need for Umrah.

Final Checks Before You Leave Home

  1. Weigh your luggage — most airlines on the Dhaka–Jeddah route allow 30–40 kg, but check your ticket
  2. Confirm your flight timing 24 hours before departure
  3. Keep ihram accessible in hand luggage if you plan to change at the airport or on the plane
  4. Leave photocopies of your passport and visa with a family member in Bangladesh
  5. Review the rules and guidelines every Bangladeshi pilgrim should know one last time

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy ihram in Makkah instead of bringing it from Bangladesh?

Yes, ihram is sold everywhere in Makkah and often at lower prices than in Dhaka. However, you need ihram before crossing the miqat — which happens on the plane — so at least one set must travel with you from Bangladesh.

How much cash should I carry for a 10-day Umrah?

Beyond your package cost, most Bangladeshi pilgrims spend the equivalent of BDT 30,000–60,000 on food upgrades, gifts, and ziyarat transport. Carry it in dollars or riyals rather than taka, which is hard to exchange in Saudi Arabia.

Is Zamzam water included in my luggage allowance?

Most airlines flying the Umrah route allow one sealed 5-litre Zamzam container per pilgrim in addition to checked baggage, but this varies by airline. Confirm with your agency before flying.

Can women carry makeup and skincare products?

Yes, but unscented options are required while in the state of ihram. After completing Umrah, normal products can be used. Packing well is the first step of a smooth journey — the rest is handled by your agency. UmrahLovers manages flights, visas, hotels near the Haram, and guided support in both holy cities.
